MSP’s praise for OAP tea party charity

- By CAROLINE WILSON

A GLASGOW MSP who tabled a motion in parliament congratulating a charity which organises tea parties for the elderly has learned first-hand how it helps.

Conservative politician Annie Wells enjoyed tea, cake and conversation with a group of pensioners from Bellahouston helped by the charity Contact the Elderly.

She tabled a motion highlighting the work of the charity after reading an article about its work in the Evening Times.

She said: “A huge thanks to the Contact the Elderly team for organising my visit to an afternoon tea party in Bellahouston yesterday.

“I was heartened by the variety of ages among the group of volunteers and guests and how this gave the tea party a real community feel.

“Having spoken to guests and shared a number of stories, I can’t stress enough how invaluable the initiative is in tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people.

“I shall very much look forward to attending another tea party in the future.”

Contact the Elderly organises free monthly Sun- day afternoon tea parties for older people who live alone.

A volunteer driver collects one or two guests and accompanies them to a tea party in a volunteer host’s home.
