Tea dance visit will mark a year of great memories

- By HOLLY LENNON

IT has been a nostalgic year for the Evening Times and our readers.

Since launching our Thanks For The Memories series, we have taken many trips down memory lane to explore Glasgow’s fascinating history.

With your help, we have been able to bring the city’s past into the present.

To mark a year since beginning our journey, we will be attending the Autumn Tea Dance at the Bridge auditorium in Easterhouse on Friday September 15 to learn even more about our history and hear some amazing stories.

Organised by Platform, the event is open to everyone from community groups to individuals.

A live band – That Swing Sensation – will be providing entertainment along with dance troupe Kennedy Cupcakes, who will be leading the dancing.

The auditorium will be transformed into a ballroom featuring handmade art works and table clothes worked on by local group – Sew Easterhouse – who meet at Platform monthly.

Platform has been running the tea dances since 2016 and they have quickly become a fixture in the calendar for those looking to socialise, meet new people, dance and reminisce.

Our reporter will be setting up shop at the afternoon dance to learn more about the history of attendees.

Jenny Crowe, Arts Manager at Platform said: “The dances were launched in 2016 by Platform as part of our 10th birthday celebrations. They were such a success that Platform has continued to run the dances – one in spring and one in autumn.

“This time round we have added an extra dance in the evening as well as our traditional afternoon dance. They are hugely popular and a great way for those attending to meet new people, partake in a whole host of dances and enjoy delicious food and drinks.

“The setting is friendly and relaxed – if you don’t want to dance just sit back, enjoy the dancers and take in the wonderful live music from the swing band.

“There has been a lack of male attendees in the past and it would be fantastic if more men attended.”

The Autumn Tea Dance will be taking place on Friday, September 15 and is suitable for all ages.

The 1pm Tea Dance has now sold out but there is a waiting list and availability for the evening tea dance at 6.30pm. Tickets are available online at www.platform-online.co.uk or telephone 0141 276 9677

Or pop into Platform to buy a ticket – address is The Bridge, 1000 Westerhouse Road, Glasgow, G34 9JW.

Guests are encouraged to bring along pictures of their younger years attending dances at the various dance halls across the city.
