Thugbatteredmanwith tyre iron in street brawl

- By HANNAH RODGER

A THUG who battered a man in the head with a tyre iron tried to claim he was acting in self defence.

Hashim Uddin, 24, attacked the man in the middle of Shawlands on September 1, 2016.

The pair, who are thought to have had a long-running feud with each other, crossed paths while driving on Kilmarnock Road around 7pm that evening and a fight broke out.

Uddin appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week for sentencing, having pleaded guilty to assaulting the man before trial on August 8, 2017.

A court heard that “there had been discontent” between Uddin and the victim “in relation to an incident a few days prior”.

The procurator fiscal depute said Uddin had punched the victim in the head and nose, ripped his T-shirt and tried to pull it off during the street brawl i n Shawlands.

Uddin then went back to his car but returned a short time later with a metal tyre iron.

The court heard: “[The victim] attempted to put his jacket back on. Mr Uddin came back with a tyre iron, a metal pole.

“With the tyre iron the accused then struck [the victim] two or three times in the back of his head before running back to his car and driving off.

“[The victim] returned to his car and called the police.”

Uddin’s lawyer explained that the pair were both in cars and they gestured to each other to stop.

She said: “The victim left his car and approached Mr Uddin, to basically challenge him.”

She said that Uddin had originally said he was acting in self defence, but clarified: “That was completely blown out of the window as he then used a tyre iron.”

Uddin had a place at university for applied biomedical science, and had to leave his studies due to his criminal history, according to his lawyer.

Sheriff McConnell said the incident was “extremely serious” and added that it was “good luck” that his victim did not suffer more serious injuries than scrapes on his back and a small cut on his head.

The 24-year-old, of Leven Street in Pollokshields, was ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work within six months.
