Heartless vandals raid and torch charity shop

- By HANNAH RODGER

HEARTLESS firebugs set a charity shop alight, destroying the premises and all the goods for sale.

The Hospice Shop on Paisley Road West was hit by the vandals on Wednesday, just after 2am.

The entire shop was badly damaged, as well as the goods inside which are sold to help the Prince and Prince of Wales of Hospice raise vital cash.

Yesterday the charity posted a statement on its social media pages, stating: “The burglar was not content with taking some money, but as you can see from the photos, also set the shop on fire.”

The organisation, which is backed by the Evening Times for its Brick by Brick Appeal, supports people with terminal illnesses and is planning to open a new facility in Bellahouston Park.

Supporters were horrified to see the damage, with some commenting that it was “the lowest of the low”.

Moira Davidson wrote: “It’s so bad breaking in to the shop, but why set it on fire?

“That is the lowest of the low but I know this will not stop the hospice from helping people as you all have the biggest hearts, I know.”

Michelle Adam also commented, saying: “This is disgusting, targeting a charity.”

A police investigation has now been launched to catch the culprits.

Chris Stephens MP, whose office is next door to the shop, was forced to close the venue due to the extensive fire damage.

A police spokeswoman said: “Around 3.20am on Wednesday 6 September 2017, police were made aware of a fire at a premises in Paisley Road West.

“Early indications are that the fire was started deliberately and an investigation is under way.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a fire at a premises on Paisley Road West in Glasgow at 2.17am on Wednesday, September 6.

“Three appliances attended and firefighters used a high-powered hose to extinguish the fire.

“There were no casualties and crews ensured the area was safe before leaving the scene.”
