Rocks net Boris for new deal at Emirates

- By JACK McCURRACH

GLASGOW Rocks have secured the services of Bulgarian ace Boris Matrakov.

The 22 year-old, who studied mathematics at the University of Glasgow, has chosen to extend his spell at the Emirates after a burgeoning end to his rookie year in the BBL wetting his appetite to compete at this level.

Having won a place on last season’s roster as another success story of the Rocks’ faith in the open trials concept, minutes on court were initially hard to come by.

However, Matrakov’s dedication eventually told and he developed into an integral member of the team in the latter stages of last season, with mounting injuries providing him with the platform to make his mark.

During the highpressure final seven games of the season, Boris helped the Rocks secure a play-off spot by averaging 8.7 points per game in an average court time of 19 minutes.

He said: “I’m happy to be part of the Glasgow Rocks again this year. The club is moving in a great direction.”

Coach Tony Garbelotto believes the player will again show his worth. He said: “Boris showed he can play and contribute last season. I believe he will become an excellent utility player for us.”

Glasgow Rocks begin their new campaign on September 10 at home against a USA Select side in the first of a series of pre-season friendlies before starting their season in earnest on October 1.
