Deme: Fearless Saints set for stellar season
ST MIRREN cult hero Stelios Demetriou has revealed the Paisley club fear nobody this season and now have Inverness Caley in their sights this weekend.
Jack Ross’ men sent out a message to the rest of the division two weeks ago when they thrashed title favourites Dundee United 3-0 to continue their good start to the campaign.
Relegated Caley are the next visitors to the Paisley 2021 stadium tomorrow and the Cypriot full-back is hoping for a repeat performance.
Speaking as he helped launched the latest Topps Match Attax, he told Times Sport: “We know Inverness is a big club who just came down from the Premiership. But we’ll be looking to get the same result and put in the same performance as we did against Dundee United two weeks ago.
“Inverness probably have a target to go up but we have that target this year, too. The United result wasn’t a surprise to us because we believe in ourselves. We believe we can win any game.
“We are aiming for the play-offs, but if we can do even better than that it would be fantastic. From the second half of last season we’ve shown we’ve got a winning mentality, no matter who we are playing against. We know we can be ruthless and score goals in every game. Hopefully tomorrow will be a nice game for our fans, too. “
Demetriou’s meandering wing play has made him a firm favourite with the Saints support, who have taken to singing his name at every game. The 26-year-old has made a habit of celebrating his goals with the crowd and plans to keep on doing that.
He explained: “This has been the most enjoyable spell in my career. Everything has been great; the structure of the club, the fans, the players, and the staff.
“So I’m really happy here. The fans have shown a lot of respect to me and that they like and even love me.
“So the best thing when you score a goal is to show them respect back by celebrating that moment with them.
“It’s great when I hear them singing my name so you need to show your love back.”
Star man for the Buddies this season has been Lewis Morgan, who also showed he can do it on the international stage when he was named man of the match in Scotland under-21s’ win over Holland in midweek.
The winger has been attracting the attention of clubs down south, but Demetriou felt he would be better developing at his current club first.
He added: “I’m not surprised at all to hear Morgy did well for Scotland the other night. I’ve been watching him since I came to the club and I know the quality he has. He’s been a big performer for a long time and he’s also doing it for his national team.
“I’m glad he stayed a bit longer at the club. As a team we’re all happy to have someone in the team like Morgy as he can win games for you.
“He’s still young and he can get his move when he’s older. He’s still learning, and under this manager he’s only going to get better.”
