CORRIE LEGEND LIZ DAWN DIES
SOAP legend Liz Dawn has died at the age of 77.
The ITV show Coronation Street confirmed the news today that the actress, who played character Vera Duckworth for 34 years, had passed away. She died last night. The actress had suffered from health problems and had recently been in hospital over the past few weeks.
In a statement, Coronation Street said: “It is with the greatest sadness that we have learned our beloved Liz Dawn has passed away last night.
“Her family at Coronation Street are heartbroken.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy at this very sad time to Liz’s devoted husband Don, her loving children Graham, Dawn, Ann and Julie, their families and her six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
“We have been blessed to have Liz in our lives, as she was such a kind, considerate and caring friend and colleague.”
The actress’ family also paid tribute to their ‘incredible’ relative who they described as an inspiration in their lives.
A family statement said: “We are devastated and heartbroken at the passing of our much-loved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, the incredible Liz Dawn.
“Liz died peacefully last night at home with her loving family around her.
“She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives and we are bereft at her passing.”
Coronation Street’s executive producer, Kieran Roberts, also paid tribute to the popular star.
He said: “Liz Dawn was a true Coronation Street legend, a brilliant actor and a wonderful person.”
“Everyone lucky enough to have worked with Liz during her 34 years playing Corrie icon Vera Duckworth will remember her with huge affection.”
Liz was in Coronation Street for 34 years, after first joining the show in 1974.
She quit the cobbles through illhealth in 2008.
She made a one-off return appearance as Vera in 2010 for the final scenes of her on-screen husband Jack Duckworth, played by Bill Tarmey.
The pair had become an iconic Corrie couple throughout the years, and fans across the nation wept as they saw them reunited one final time.
It is understood that the star had recently been restricted to a wheelchair.
