Boy racer caught after ‘chaos driving’ in city

- By HANNAH RODGER

A BOY racer “chaos driving” around the city centre nearly caused a crash when he lost control of his luxury car.

Junaid Siraj was racing another car on St Vincent Street when he was spotted by officers on July 8, last year.

The 21-year-old was driving an orange Porsche at the time and was seen revving his engine beside another car at traffic lights.

When the lights changed, both cars accelerated and drove off over the 20mph limit.

Officers followed the car and tried to stop it but Siraj lost control due to the “aggressive manner his vehicle was being driven”.

He lost control of the vehicle and nearly crashed into other cars on the road.

On August 16, last year, a Volkswagen Golf, registered to Siraj, was seen on Newton Street over the speed limit, while on January 9, last year, he was driving a Mazda dangerously.

Siraj appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court before Sheriff Bonnar, to answer to three charges of dangerous driving and two charges of failing to appear for court dates.

The court heard “officers obser ved a Volkswagen Golf driving at excessive speeds.

“They then observed the car being driven at speed, changing from left to right lanes.”

Police found the registered keeper to be Siraj, but when they went to speak to him two weeks later he refused to say who was driving the vehicle at the time.

The court also heard on January 9, last year, around 8.20pm, Siraj was spotted behind the wheel of a Mazda on Maryhill Road.

He was driving so fast he ended up “straddling the central reservation” according to the procurator fiscal depute.

Police saw him and tried to stop the vehicle on the road but Siraj drove away. When asked why he didn’t stop, Siraj, of Chancellor Street, said: “I did stop but when nobody came, I drove off.”

His solicitor told the court he had shown a level of “immaturity” but had “expressed remorse” for his “chaos driving”.

Sheriff Bonnar sentenced him to do 260 hours of unpaid work, and banned him from driving for three years.
