Jamieson aiming high at British Masters

- By NICK RODGER

GLASGOW golfer Scott Jamieson has pitched up at Close House happy to be avoiding a close shave as he looks for a late season push at this week’s British Masters.

The Cathkin Braes ace gave his campaign a timely lift last weekend with a share of 20th place in the Portugal Masters as he ended a run of five successive missed cuts. Over the past couple of years, Jamieson’s fight to retain his Tour card has gone right down to the wire but at 71st on the Order of Merit, the former Scottish amateur No.1 is looking upwards instead of over his shoulder.

The top 60 players at the end of the season contest the money-spinning Race to Dubai finale and Jamieson is eager to keep climbing after getting his focus back following a mid-season slump.

Jamieson, who had a fourth and a third in South Africa and India at the start of the year and then enjoyed good finishes at the BMW PGA and the Irish Open, said: “I had a dip in form in the summer and that was strange.

“You’re still trying but I was maybe not as switched on as I needed to be during that period.

“Perhaps that was down to how the previous two years had been.

“I made good cheques at Wentworth and Ireland but I wasn’t as switched on as I should have been after that.

“You take the eye off the ball and start digging into things you shouldn’t really dig in to. It’s about getting the focus back.

“Towards the end of the season, though, you’re always more switched on, whether you’re fighting to keep your card or getting into the Final Series.

“Earlier in the year you’re going week to week and you say ‘there are plenty of events to go’ but then you get through the summer and all of a sudden there are only a couple of weeks left.

“Last week in Portugal was a reminder that I’m still in there and hopefully I can push on now.”

Jamieson’s fellow Glaswegian, Marc Warren, finished second in the Portugal Masters as he took a huge leap towards safeguarding his playing rights after an injuryhampered season.

Jamieson added: “I think Marc will have a strong end to the year now.”
