Older people are failing to claim rightful benefits
THOUSANDS of older people in Glasgow are missing out on social security cash they are entitled to but are not claiming.
The Scottish Citizens Advice Bureau network has joined up with the Scottish Government to launch a campaign urging people to contact the CAB for help in getting the money they are due.
Citizens Advice Scotland chief executive Derek Mitchell said the extra financial support could make a big difference to the lives of many people.
However they are not claiming because they don’t know how to go about it.
He said: “In some cases, they feel embarrassed about claiming which is often particularly true of older people.
“Our message today is that nobody need hold back from claiming what they are due – they have earned it so claim it and the CAB is here to help you.”
Mr Mitchell said the security system can seem complex and intimidating, particularly to those who are not used to it.
But he added: “If you are entitled to some kind of assistance that money is not charity, it is yours and you should claim it.
“If you dropped the money in the street you would pick it up.
“If you won a competition you had entered you would take the money. “This is just the same. “You may be entitled to hundreds or even thousands of pounds so take this opportunity and let us help you get what you are entitled to.”
Sarah Erskine, chief officer of Maryhill and Possilpark CAB, said every day staff see clients who are not aware of their benefit entitlements and the income they could be receiving, particularly if there has been a change of circumstances such as ill health or having to take on extra caring responsibilities.
She added: “At your local CAB, we can undertake a benefits check and talk you through your bene- fits entitlements and even support you to make an application if you would like to do so.
“As Scotland’s largest independent advice network, our advice is free, impartial and confidential so there is really nothing to lose by coming in to see us.”
