Ship offices restoration is hailed
THE restoration of shipbuilding offices in Govan has been honoured at an industry award ceremony.
The Fairfield shipbuilding offices project was given the Best Rescue of a Historic Building award at the Scottish Heritage Angel Awards 2017.
Pat Cassidy and the volunteers restored the Grade Alisted former office of the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company in Govan.
The historic building was in a state of disrepair when it was bought by Govan Workspace in 2009.
A £5.8m restoration project led by Govan Workspace, Govan Conservation Advisory Group and a team of dedicated volunteers saw meticulous care given to conser- vation of the building’s outstanding features and transformed it into an asset for the Govan community, which now hosts a community-based museum and commercial office space.
Dominic Ferrie, a Kelvinside Academy pupil who has spent the last three years investigating the design and building of his school, was also Highly Commended in the Best Contribution to a Heritage Project by Young People category.
Launched in 2014 with funding from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation (ALWF), the Scottish Heritage Angel Awards celebrates both groups and individuals who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to protect and, in many cases, rescue Scotland’s heritage.
