Joy for Tony after Rocks record win

- SPORTSWIDE

GLASGOW Rocks coach Tony Garbelotto believes he is finally seeing the progress he has sought from the outset of his tenure after watching his team destroy Manchester Giants 118-62 last night in the British Basketball League ina recordbreaking win.

Ali Fraser and new signing Kofi Josephs hit 18 points each off the bench as the Scots surged decisively clear with 19 straight points at the start of the second quarter.

And with winless Manchester struggling to hold Glasgow in check, the hosts pulled out a 22-0 run to open the fourth that ensured the rout.

“Now we look like a BBL-type team and we’re playing with the effort and intensity you need,” Garbelotto said.

“And better results come from that. Our bench was great and we see that every day and that’s a big reason why we’ve really improved the past two games.”

Meanwhile,Caledonia Pride coach Bart Sengers has told his players to take a long hard look at themselves after their shock 69-55 defeat to Oaklands Wolves.

The Scots became the first-ever team to lose to the WBBL strugglers and Sengers reckons a tougher attitude is urgently required.

“The players need to think about ‘why am I not doing well and what is holding me back?’” the Dutchman declared. “And we’ll go from there.”

Ryan Burnett made history as he beat Zhanat Zhakiyanov by unanimous decision in their WBA and IBF world bantamweight unification fight in Belfast.

The home favourite came through the biggest test of his career to date to claim an 18th straight win after 12 rounds against his Kazakh opponent, who was trained by Ricky Hatton.

The 25-year-old became the first Irishman to unify a decision in Belfast, with the judges’ scorecards reading 118-110, 119-109 and 116-112.
