Belle and Sebastian lend support with pool pledge

GLASGOW indie rockers Belle and Sebastian are the latest to throw their weight behind the campaign to renovate Govanhill Baths.

The group toured the Calder Street venue this week to learn more about a community shares scheme giving people the chance to invest in the Edwardian building.

Govanhill Community Baths Trust must raise the final £300,000 of the £6.4million needed to turn the Baths into a health and wellbeing centre.

A spokesman for Govanhill Baths said: “Over the years Govanhill Baths has become a hub for the arts and we continue to draw innovative artists of all kinds to this unique building.

“We have always been great fans of Belle and Sebastian and we were really delighted with their visit and their support for our Community Shares drive.

“Belle and Sebastian joined us during a particularly busy week for us as we are also preparing to host a number of artists for the Sonica 2017 Festival.

“This is just another example of how important Govan- hill Baths is and why it is so vital our Community Shares campaign succeeds and helps safeguard our future.”

Last month Nicola Sturgeon launched the community shares scheme, which give locals the chance to own a stake in the building.

The B-listed building will turn into an impressive community hub for the South Side area with a gym, community cafe, community kitchen, hot desk facilities for local businesses and meeting rooms.

People can now buy their shares online at www.crowdfunder.co .uk/ Govanhill-Baths
