Rojano ready and raring to go after work permit wait

- By JOHN McGILL

MARTIN CANNING believes new Hamilton striker Antonio Rojano is ready to make his mark on the Ladbrokes Premiership after finally cutting free of the red tape which delayed his move.

The Argentinian agreed his switch to Scotland back in August, but was only cleared to play a fortnight ago after a two-month wait for a work permit.

But, having watched the 26-year-old put in an encouraging display as he made his first start against Partick Thistle during Tuesday night’s draw, Canning reckons that hold-up has worked in the frontman’s favour.

Now he believes Rojano, who scored 15 times for Real Potosi in Bolivia last season, is ready to make his mark with Accies.

“I thought he did well, especially as he lasted the 90 minutes when we had not planned for that,” said Canning.

“It’s now just about getting him really up to speed. That was his first full game and he was tired afterwards.

“We’ll see how he goes in training this week, but hopefully he can be stronger again come Saturday when we go up to Dundee.

“I know it sounds strange and it certainly wasn’t ideal with the length of time it took to get his work permit to come through, but I think it’s actually been a blessing for Antonio himself.

“It’s given him the time to settle in without having the spotlight of playing games put on him.

“He’s been able to train away and get used to things. He was also staying in a hotel for a spell at the beginning, but now has a flat and brought his girlfriend over.

“Yes, it was frustrating for us, but for his longerterm future, it will probably end up helping him.”
