Clarke: I wanted a win in Glasgow

- By JOHN McGILL

KILMARNOCK boss Steve Clarke insists he wasn’t satisfied with only taking a point apiece from Celtic and Rangers in his first two games in charge.

The 54-year-old took over from Lee McCulloch a fortnight ago and was handed a tough initiation to life at Rugby Park as he took his side to Glasgow twice in four days.

Chris Burke’s late strike snatched a draw at Ibrox before an impressive second-half display against the Hoops yielded another crucial point.

But the former West Brom boss revealed he wanted to emerge from the double-header with a first victory secured.

He said: “It is probably a little bit less than I would have hoped for. I was hoping we could win one of them.

“I have never gone to a game thinking we were going to lose. Never. There is always a way.

“If you don’t have that belief within you there is no point in going and that has been the message to the players in the last couple of games.

“It is okay to speak and say you will get a result but if you don’t believe it inside it is harder to get and in both games the players have shown they do believe.”

Despite two moraleboosting results, Killie remain second-bottom of the Premiership and Clarke has challenged his players to kick on and take maximum points at home to Hibs tomorrow.

He told the club website: “Both results should help the confidence of the players. But we don’t get too carried away, it is only two points and you have to win games in this league.

“My first home game is Hibs who are doing very well under Neil Lennon so I have told them to go home, rest and go again.”
