Road to close for 18 months for school demolition work

A WEST End road will be closed for 18 months and parking will be restricted while work gets under way to demolish a Glasgow school.

Partick Housing Association is re-developing the former St Peter’s Primary School to built 60 affordable housing in the area.

The £10.5million project will create 31 flats for social rent, 21 ‘mid market’ rent and eight flats for supported accommodation.

The contractor, CBC, has been granted permission to close Dowanhill Street between Chancellor Street and White Street.

The closure will be in place from today until May 24, 2019, and diversions will be in place.

The housing association warned that parking will also be restricted in the area.

Designed by Collective Architecture, the development will include a mixture of new build and retention of part of the old school building.

The flats are expected to be completed by summer 2019.

Glasgow City Council, from whom Partick Housing Association acquired the site, contributed over £5m towards the £10.5m project.

Councillor Kenny McLean, City Convener for Neighbourhoods, Housing and Public Realm, said: “I am delighted that work has begun on this fantastic project in Partick, which will provide 60 new flats that meet the needs of a wide variety of people.

“The council was thrilled to work with our partners to deliver such homes in an area that is pressurised in terms of housing.

“This landmark building, the former St Peter’s Primary, will now serve the local community in an equally valuable new way.”

Iain Nicolson, Chair of the Association’s Investment Committee, noted: “There is a real shortage of good quality, affordable housing in Partick.

“Our latest ambitious project at St Peter’s will deliver 60 new flats.”
