Support for Miller from teammate
A FORMER teammate of Liam Miller has spoken of his devastation at learning the ex-Celtic midfielder is battling cancer.
Kevin McBride admitted he had been left distraught when he found out about the illness that Miller, who has a wife and three young children, was suffering from earlier this year and has been in touch to offer his support.
It emerged on Sunday night that the 36-year-old, who also played for Hibernian, had been diagnosed with the disease.
FORMER Hibernian manager John Hughes has offered his support to Liam Miller in the 36-year-old’s battle against cancer, and has described the former Celtic and Manchester United midfielder as ‘one of the best professionals’ he has worked with.
Hughes brought Miller to the Easter Road side in 2009 and the ex-Republic of Ireland internationalist played his part in a fourth-place finish that earned Hibs entry to the Europa League.
Such was Miller’s influence that season that he was named the league sponsor’s Player of the Month for October.
While Hughes, who has been out of work since leaving Raith Rovers at the end of last season, had been aware of the Irishman’s plight – news of Miller’s battle reached the pubic domain via social media late on Sunday evening.
“It’s absolute tragic news,” said Hughes.
“I knew he had cancer and all my hope and prayers are with him, he’s a fighter. If anybody can come through, he can – that’s for sure.”
Miller moved to Old Trafford after beginning his career at Celtic and also turned out for Sunderland and QPR before returning north of the border.
Hughes had no hesitation in recruiting the dynamic midfielder and admits he was hugely impressed by Miller’s dedication on and off the pitch.
He added: “I signed Liam and I couldn’t believe it, it was like winning the lottery because the window had closed.
“He was one of the best professionals I’ve ever worked with, he was unbelievable.”
