Glasgow warms up for the Style Mile Carnival

- By VIVIENNE NICOLL

HUNDREDS of performers will light up the city centre this weekend as they take part in the Style Mile Carnival.

It will include a giant robin, a snow globe with stilt walkers, samba group SambaYaBamba and a huge snowflake with Santa making a guest appearance.

Lord Provost Eva Bolander will be joined at the head of the carnival by fouryear-old Schiehallion ward patient Lydia Yilmaz and her family who are raising funds for the Glasgow Children’s Hospital charity. More than 30 organisations will take part in the event including Distinctive Dance Academy, Bridgeton Community Learning, Visual Statement and Mount Florida Primary School.

Thousands of festive shoppers and visitors are expected to watch the carnival as it heads from St Enoch Square to George Square on Sunday.

Ms Bolander said: “The Style Mile carnival will bring the magic of Christmas to the heart of Glasgow city centre.

“I am looking forward to joining Lydia and her mum at the front of this spectacular festive parade.

“Tens of thousands of people will be able to witness their favourite Christmas characters winding their way through the city’s streets promoting all that Glasgow retailers have to offer.”

Anne Ledgerwood, chairwoman of the City Centre Retail Association, said the carnival is fun for all the family and showcases the heart of the city during the festive season.

She added: “From amazing shops to outstanding restaurants and bars, Glasgow has something for everyone this Christmas. This is a great way to grab some festive spirit while making a head-start on the Christmas shopping.”

Kareth McCarthy, of MET Wedding Cars, said: “We are delighted to have supplied the vehicle which will lead the Style Mile Carnival this year.

“It is always a vibrant event that brings the magic of Christmas to the streets around the heart of Glasgow.”

The carnival will leave St Enoch Square at 2.30pm on Sunday for George Square.
