Wilson: My pal Ross will continue to be Gers rock

- By CHRIS JACK

AIDAN WILSON is confident Auchenhowie peer Ross McCrorie will bounce back from his mistake against Hamilton on Saturday.

The defender cost Rangers the first goal of the game as David Templeton intercepted a slack back pass and rounded keeper Wes Foderingham.

The afternoon went from bad to worse for the Light Blues as Darren Lyon netted a second goal for Accies to condemn Graeme Murty’s side to an embarrassing Ibrox defeat.

McCrorie showed no illeffects of the second half error and Gers kid Wilson has no doubt the 19-year-old will continue go from strength to strength.

He told SportTimes: “Ross has done well since he has come into the team.

“I played alongside him for a long time and it is good to see him doing well. He has taken his chance and hopefully now I can get that chance as well.

“Ross will be fine after the weekend. He will come back and he will be as strong as ever. You can’t think about your mistakes too much. It is in the past and Ross will move forward. He didn’t hide away after it and that is a credit to him.

“He has done really well since he has come in and hopefully he can keep his place.

“He was out on loan last season and I got the chance to come into the team. It is about taking it when it comes along so hopefully I can get another one soon.”

Wilson made two appearances for Pedro Caixinha’s side last term as he was handed his debut against Aberdeen and then helped the Gers to victory over St Johnstone.

He signed a new long-term contract at Ibrox last month and knows he must make the most of any chance he is given in the Premiership.

He said: “I think the season has gone well for me so far. I was out with a niggling injury with my hip but now I am back hopefully I can push for a first team place.

“It gave me a lot of confidence to come in last season and I thought I did well. I am just looking to get back to full fitness and get myself going again to push for a place in the team.

“Wherever you go through your career, although I hope I stay at Rangers, you are going to be faced with a lot of challenges and a lot of competition for a place.

“At Rangers right now there is a lot of competition but I trust myself to go and fight for a place.

“My new contract keeps me at the club until 2020 and gives me another three years to try and get those games and establish myself and hopefully I can sign another deal after that.

“I still had a year-and-ahalf left on my contract but once the club came in it was really straightforward and it got done pretty quickly.”

Wilson is one of a host of Ibrox hopefuls that have caught the eye in recent months as Rangers look to produce their own stars of the future.

And the 18-year-old reckons he is building on solid foundations as he looks to progress into the Light Blues first team squad.

He said: “Craig Mulholland has shown a lot of faith in me, as has Graeme Murty and I have worked a lot with him. He has done a lot for me and helped me progress, and so has Billy Kirkwood. I am happy with my progress just now and I just need to keep working hard.

“Every time I go round there I need to go and impress and I always do my best. Whoever comes in, I will be ready to show them what I can do.

“I want to stay at the club for a very long time so I will work as hard as I can to make that happen.”
