Plenty to be thankful for at Braehead

-

THANKSGIVING is a time of the year when family makes a point of getting together. For me, it’s been five or six years since I was home for it.

It gets tougher every year and obviously you want to be home with your family, but having FaceTime I got to see everyone.

Usually at Thanksgiving, when I’m at home, it comes down to who’s hosting so I’ll go to either my mom’s or dad’s side.

Like most households, it’s the big turkey dinner with sweet potatoes and those weird cranberry things than come out of a can as well as pumpkin pie.

Plus we watch the American football that’s on and get to hang out with family members you don’t get to see all too often.

What my family does is commonplace when it comes to Thanksgiving, but I know the meal can change depending on people’s backgrounds or tastes, but turkey is the standard.

Over here, it’s very different because Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated and it can be tough trying to watch American football.

But we found a place downtown and I had dinner and watched the football so we made the most of it.

Tyler Shattock and I went to a place called Cooper’s where they had a turkey dinner deal and the football on the screens so that’s what we did for Thanksgiving.

Being in a different country can make it a little more interesting, but the hardest part is being so far away, knowing the rest of your family are all hanging out and you can’t be there.

When it comes to football, I should cheer for the Chicago Bears, as that’s where I’m from, but there hasn’t been much to cheer for. I’m more a New England Patriots fan.

I enjoy watching sport in general. We went to Hampden to the Scottish League Cup final on Sunday and that was pretty cool.

Once Motherwell got the red card, they didn’t have a chance.

But since I’ve been here, I’ve gone to a Scotland World Cup qualifier at Hampden and I went to a Rangers game so I’ve covered them all.

The experience of going to sport here is great because you’ve got the chants going on all through the game, which is cool.

I would love for the fans to cheer me if I missed the net by 25 feet, but for just getting a shot on the goal at least.

It was a great Thanksgiving weekend where we got the win as well so when that happens, things are always that little bit better.
