Ladies lunch raises thousands
MORE than 160 women from across Glasgow raised nearly £10,000 for Unite Against Cancer.
The afternoon fundraising event was the first of its kind for the charity which was set up in 2012 by Colin Smith, 29, after his younger brother passed away following a battle with osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer.
Hosted by singer and Evening Times columnist Michelle McManus at Boclair House Hotel in Bearsden, the ladies lunch raised more than £9,300. All proceeds will go towards funding a number of the charity’s ventures, including the ‘Christopher Douglas Smith Postgraduate Scholarship’ at The University of Glasgow.
The award provides a fully funded scholarship for the Masters in Cancer Sciences postgraduate programme, which enables students to work with world-leading scientists and cancer specialists to address the latest challenges in cancer diagnosis, research and treatment.
So far, four people have benefited from the scholarship fund.
Colin Smith said: “We are extremely grateful to all those who came together to show support for Unite Against Cancer, and of course, to the individuals who dedicated a lot of personal time and effort to organising and delivering what I hear was a fantastic, fun-filled eve As a charity, we depend on the generosity of our supporters’ donations and the work of all thos who promote us. Events like this a paramount to our ability to contin supporting world-class research, whilst also raising awareness of th various types of treatments availa to cancer sufferers.
“We currently have some very exciting plans for highlighting the importance of preventative measures in the fight against cancer, so it’s great to see so many people offering their support as we plan new ventures”.
