Sammon so glad to be off mark at last BETTER LATE THAN NEVER CONOR

- By SCOTT MULLEN

CONOR SAMMON admits it was a relief to be 15thtime lucky after he eventually opened his scoring account for Partick Thistle.

The on-loan Irishman has been in red and yellow since August but has found the goal trail tough going as he attempts to show parent club Hearts what they are missing.

However against Motherwell on Wednesday his drought finally came to an end.

With the home side already 2-0 up against their below-par visitors, Sammon calmly slotted the ball into the net on 28 minutes to open his Firhill account.

“It’s massive as a striker to get off the mark,” said Sammon. “When you move to a new team you want to get on the score sheet as soon as possible.

“It’s been frustrating that it’s taken so long but really pleased that it’s a sweet one to get three points.

“It was a really enjoyable first half. I felt we really put them under pressure, it was a good reaction after Saturday’s game and Miles [Storey] and myself worked well.

“We want to use our pace and make it difficult for defences and I thought we were dangerous, particularly in the first half. Hopefully that goal is the first of many.”

Sammon is right when it comes to the link-up play between him and Storey. The creative and quick play from the former Aberdeen man was just too much for Motherwell’s makeshift back three to deal with on Tuesday, and his strike partner said: “We have good options.

“He is a very unselfish player. He’s got good pace and power. He created two goals. I enjoy playing with him.

“He has that raw pace and power. Even balls that he isn’t favourite to get to, he will and suddenly he’s creating chances. He probably wanted to be on the score sheet but we can have a good partnership.

“We have Dools [Kris Doolan] as well so we are all fighting to link up and help each other score and help the team win games.”

While Sammon’s first goal for the Jags appeared to have them on easy street, a secondhalf wobble saw Motherwell come roaring back into proceedings to come within a goal of Alan Archibald’s men with plenty time still to play.

The Irishman confessed it was a nervous last 11 minutes as Thistle hung on for only their third win of the Premiership campaign.

He said: “It was yes. It was frustrating having been 3-0 up.

“We felt Motherwell would have a reaction and it a got bit nervy which is frustrating from our point of view that we allowed it to get that way.

“The positive thing is that we’ve held on. Motherwell are a good side, they have done well this season and they put as under a lot of pressure towards the end. We stood up to it and hold on which is the most important thing.”

THAT win sets things up nicely for a mouth-watering clash at Dens Park tomorrow between Thistle and Dundee, with the Jags just one point behind their hosts at the foot of the table.

“We look to move on and try to get some momentum,” added Sammon. “After Saturday we were just looking for the next opportunity to go out there and impose ourselves and make an i mpact. We need to do that again on Saturday.

“Dundee are a good side too. We have to be on song. It will get us off the bottom if we win and that’s a big incentive. It’s not a nice position to be in. Players get frustrated when results are not going well but you have to stick together and show character. It will l be a massive game.”
