Dogged Rose rises to occasion

JUSTIN Rose signed off for the year with a stunning eight-shot victory at the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta, playing 28 holes on the final day.

The Englishman has now won three tournaments in the past seven weeks, sealing his latest success with a dominant display.

Having led from day one, the world No.6 first completed the last 10 holes of his weatherdelayed third round, carding a 66, before finishing in style with a 10-under score of 62.

That left him 29 under par for the tournament, while the margin between him and nearest challenger, 18-year-old Phachara Khongwatmai, was the largest of his career.

His eight-stroke victory is also the biggest win on this year’s Asian Tour.

A jubilant Rose told www.asiantour.com “I have had a dream week and I have played incredible golf.

“It is my last event of the season. To finish the year on a good note and still have a couple of weeks to enjoy this win over Christmas and new year is really nice.”

Glasgow Rocks coach Tony Garbelotto admitted his team crumbled after they exited the BBL Trophy in the first round as Cheshire Phoenix delivered a late knockout punch to snatch a 79-75 win,

The Scots, paced by 20 points from Kieron Achara, stormed back from an early deficit to lead by 12 and were 64-55 ahead with seven minutes to go.

But the hosts closed the game with a 23-11 run as the Rocks fella apart, leaving them with only the league and playoffs to battle for after Christmas.

“We threw away a game,” said Garbelotto. “We were playing reasonable basketball but we messed about and we missed shots.”

New Glasgow signing Nate Britt had six points on his debut but was blocked on a shot that would have tied the game at 77-77 with one second left.
