SCALES OF JUSTICE Boyfriend took offence at lewd remark

-

A YOUNG man turned violent in reaction to a lewd comment made about his girlfriend.

Sean Murray, 23, punched his victim repeatedly on the face and head, knocking the other man’s metal bridge out his mouth.

Procurator fiscal depute Harry Findlay told Glasgow Sheriff Court that the assault took place during the early hours of January 4 this year. The complainer, who had been on a night out at The Garage nightclub, was outside on Sauchiehall Street waiting for a taxi when he was approached by Murray – who was unknown to him.

The two men were said to have at first shook hands, but then the accused lashed out and punched his victim several times on the face and head. Once the incident was stopped, the injured man was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary by ambulance

Although admitting that the assault was unprovoked, it was explained in defence that the accused took offence when a lewd remark was made about his partner. Accepting that he went too far, Murray was said to be re- morseful for causing his victim pain.

Sheriff Norman Ritchie sentenced the accused to a Community Payback Order with supervision for 18 months and 150 hours of unpaid work to be completed within six months.

Murray, of Dumbarton Road, was also ordered to pay his victim £500 compensation.
