TALKING ST MIRREN

- By STEWART FISHER

GAVIN Reilly reckons St Mirren’s last meeting with Inverness Caledonian Thistle provides the perfect blueprint for the battling qualities which have taken the Paisley side three points clear at the top of the Championship table.

After a shaky start to the season, John Robertson’s side have lost just two of their last 14 matches in all competitions, one of which came in a fiery encounter in the teeth of a snowstorm to Jack Ross’ team in late November, with the Paisley side’s top scorer notching the last-minute clincher in a 2-0 win.

Having been introduced from the bench for new signing Danny Mullen against Morton on Tuesday, Reilly will be keen to get back on the scoresheet against the Highlanders.

“If we are to go on and win the league this season we can look at two games which really stood out for us in terms of our fighting spirit,” said Reilly.

“The game up in Inverness, with the conditions and the way we were under the cosh but we still managed to come away with the three points.

“Then the other one was away to Queen of the South when we were 2-0 down and we won 3-2. These are the games which can be big turning points for any team.

“We had been on a good run anyway, but to get maximum points did wonders for our confidence and we want to keep that going.

“They have picked up a wee bit recently because they had a slow start to the season,” he added.

“That was probably because they had a lot of new players and a new manager as well. Now they have gelled a wee bit, you can see over the last month or so how they have improved.

“We know it won’t be an easy game but we have beaten them twice already this season, s o hopefully we can keep our 100 per cent record going.”

REILLY, a summer signing from Hearts, is just one goal shy of becoming the first St
