Murph so proud at signing up for heroes

- By MATTHEW LINDSAY

JAMIE Murphy has spoken of his pride at signing for his boyhood heroes Rangers.

Murphy has joined the Ibrox club on loan until the end of the season – and the move will become permanent in the summer when a “guaranteed fixed fee” of around £1million will be paid to his parent club Brighton.

The 28-year-old, who started his career at Motherwell before moving to Sheffield United five years ago, grew up in Glasgow supporting Rangers and was delighted when the deal was finalised in the early hours of this morning.

He posted on Twitter: “Wore the shirt many times as a kid but the chance to put it on for real is something special. Will always be worn with pride. Thank you all for the support.”

The forward, who can play either as a winger or a striker, will now jet out to the United States to join up with Graeme Murty’s squad on their warmweather training break in Florida.

Murphy played 35 times for Brighton, who he joined in 2015, as they won promotion from the Championship last season, but he has found first team opportunities hard to come by in the Premier League this term. He has only made four appearances for the Seagulls, three of which have been as a substitute.

“Jamie’s a fantastic professional, a great lad, and has a desire to play,” said Brighton manager Chris Hughton said.

“While we were in no hurry to see him leave, we do understand his desire to play for his boyhood team and one of the biggest clubs in Scotland.

“He’s been excellent for the club, ever since we signed him from Sheffield United, and wrote himself into club folklore as a crucial part of our promotion-winning side last season.”
