Medic in flu warning to hospital visitors

-

THE head of nursing for Glasgow’s health board has issued a fresh plea to the public not to visit relatives in hospital if they are suffering from cold or flu symptoms.

Figures show flu rates across Scotland have quadrupled to their highest levels since 2010, heaping pressure on hospitals across Scotland with boards forced to cancel operations.

Dr Margaret McGuire said, the board was facing a “challenge” to prevent the spread to patients and staff.

She said: “We would urge anyone who has experienced any flu symptoms within the last forty-eight hours not to visit hospital as it could be passed on to patients who are already very unwell.

“Flu is extremely infectious and can easily spread to other people – that’s why it is vital that you protect your loved ones in hospital by staying away until you are better.

“If you are well enough to visit, please remember to keep your hands clean by washing and using antibacterial gel. Clean hands are the best way to stop spreading infections.”

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde urged the public to make use of Minor Injuries Units (MIUs) including the West Glasgow MIU, which opened on January 3.

Last week Heather Teale revealed her daughter Bethany Walker, 18, had passed away after falling in with flu

The talented student, of Applecross in the Scottish Highlands was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after she developed pneumonia but later died.
