Kris says the Blues must aim higher...

- By NEIL CAMERON

KRIS Commons says Rangers need to aim higher than just the cup competitions – despite having not won a major trophy since 2010.

The Scottish Cup is their only chance of silverware this season but old rival Commons says this is not what the Ibrox club is all about.

“I think deep down they know they won’t win the league, but if they could add a cup that would be a big coup,” he said.

“I don’t see winning a cup will give them momentum. They need a long-term strategy. They tried to get a manager after seven weeks of chasing Derek McInnes and not getting him.

“They’ve had to give it to Graeme Murty because there is not anyone else. I don’t think they have the money or resources to get a big name like an Alan Pardew, when he was available.

“And the money they have invested in the squad – £9.5million – they have paid a lot of money in wages to a few foreign players. But they are now in a transition period where they will be looking to stop 10-in-a-row. No question. Whether they win a cup between now and that happening, stopping 10 is the big thing.”

Rangers are at Fraserburgh on Sunday for what might well be the start of a run to Hampden.

But, according to Commons, they should be closer to Celtic.

“I think they needed to stick with paying a lot of money to get to the Scottish Premiership ASAP, which, barring one season is what they did,” said Commons.

“The money they spent last summer was extortionate, the figures I am hearing.

“It’s probably more than Celtic is paying but Celtic can guarantee you Champions League. Rangers are still way behind Celtic and they are in a battle for second place or third if they don’t get it right.”
