Nightmare for drivers as snowbringsmorehavoc
GLASGOW was brought to a standstill again yesterday as snow swept across the country.
Roads across the west of Scotland saw severe delays and even closures as the cold snap that has engulfed Scotland continued.
Trains from some areas of the central belt into Glasgow were cancelled or delayed throughout Sunday as workers battled to deal with the heavy snow showers.
Glasgow Airport briefly closed yesterday afternoon as the runway was cleared but caused minimal disruption to flight services.
On the roads, some bus services across the region struggled to cope with the snow and ice.
Twelve McGills bus services in Renfrewshire were stopped yesterday afternoon.
As rain replaced the snow in Glasgow, surface water on the roads caused havoc.
Traffic Scotland appealed to drivers throughout the day to be extremely careful as the unpredictable weather brought heavy rain showers later in the afternoon and into the evening.
The shock weather also led to injuries on Scotland’s roads after a two-car crash on the A82.
Drifting snow saw five people hurt near to Glencoe Mountain Resort, with the snowgate nearby now closed as rising winds led to white-out conditions.
The injuries to those hurt in the crash are not thought to be life threatening.
Inspector Jen Valentine said: “We have closed the A82 whilst we deal with the collision and get those injured off to hospital and I would ask that drivers avoid the area at this time.”
Lorry breakdowns and a one car collision on the M74 also slowed traffic for a period yesterday afternoon.
A one-car collision on the westbound M8 near Shotts also caused delays for a period on Sunday.
After the recent wintry spell, temperatures are set to rise to as high as 11 degrees this week.
