Big boost for boatclubHQ
PLANS to repair and renovate a historic boathouse on the banks of the Clyde are set to take a major step forward.
The aim of the scheme is to encourage more people onto the river and to allow the West Boathouse to be used by a wide range of local groups.
The B-listed structure, which is owned by the city council, was purpose built for Clydesdale Amateur Rowing Club and Clyde Amateur Rowing Club in 1905.
Glasgow Building Preservation Trust is leading the redevelopment of the boathouse on behalf of the clubs and this week councillors are expected to agree a £100,000 contribution towards the estimated £3million cost of the improvement works.
A report to councillors says: “The project to rejuvenate the building will allow the clubs to continue to deliver the community engagement and training opportunities which are integral to their activities.
“The project also allows them to build on these activities which will assist in improving the sporting engagement , health, social, cultural and educational related outcomes for the surrounding community and the people of the East End of Glasgow.
“Both the clubs recognise the importance of attracting a wider audience including some wider uses of the boathouse to support its long term viability.
“This will be to offer more for the immediate communities of Calton and Gorbals, enable inclusion by minority groups, residents and visitors to the city and contribute to ongoing improvements of Glasgow Green and river and city renewal.”
A wide range of groups have expressed an interest in using the boathouse for activities including as meeting venue, for paddle tours in traditionally built boats and as a base for cycle tours of the river.
