McCall sacked as Bradford manager

- By KEN MILLAR

STUART McCall has emerged as a candidate for the Scotland job after the former Motherwell and Rangers manager was sacked by Bradford City last night.

After a dismal run of six straight defeats, the club’s board moved quickly to remove McCall, who has experience in the Scotland national team’s dugout as part of Gordon Strachan’s backroom staff, and was in his third spell as manager of the League One side having taken over as caretaker for two matches in 2000 before a three-year spell from 2007-10.

McCall took over at Fir Park in December 2010 and spent four successful years in the Motherwell hotseat before being installed as Rangers manager for the run-in of the ill-fated 2014-15 Championship season in which the Ibrox club failed to win promotion after finishing runners-up to Hearts before suffering a heavy 6-1 aggregate defeat to Well in the Premiership play-off final.

Six days after his departure from Ibrox, McCall rejoined Bradford but that stint has now ended.

A Bradford City statement said: “This decision has not been taken lightly, and this is a sad day for everyone involved. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Stuart, who joined the club at a difficult time and restored the fans’ belief when the odds were much against us.

“Unfortunately, we have now suffered six straight defeats and the last two fixtures in particular have not brought about the positive change in performances or results that we all hoped for.”
