McGinn: Malky’s my man for Scots
ST MIRREN captain Stephen McGinn believes the next Scotland manager is sitting right under the noses of the SFA board in the shape of Malky Mackay.
McGinn, who played for Mackay at Watford, feels he is the perfect choice but that would probably involve leaving his current role as performance director.
Mackay took charge of the last friendly international against Holland at Pittodrie last November after Gordon Strachan’s reign was over.
However, he was undermined by outgoing chief executive Stewart Regan who said Mackay would not be considered for the Scotland manager’s job.
McGinn, Ladbrokes Championship Player of the Month for January, said: “I can only speak of when I worked with him but he was one of the best managers I’ve had.
“I know [brother and Hibs midfielder] John was in the recent squad when he took charge and he absolutely loved the week.
“I knew he would as he is a brilliant coach and a great man manager. He was terrific with me and the boys at Watford loved him.
“His management career has been very impressive. At Watford we were on a shoestring budget and he did well. He also took Cardiff into the Premier League.
“The SFA have taken their time to make a decision but if it was Malky I would endorse it.
“I would love to see him back as a manager and I know how proud he would be to be Scotland boss.”
McGinn has helped the Buddies notch up what appears to be an unassailable 14-point lead over nearest title rivals Dundee Uniteed.
He said: “It’s in our hands and we know if we win enough games we can really enjoy it.
“It’s been an incredible transition from last season.”
