Club in cash boost from builder

-

GLASGOW Gladiators’ powerchair football club has received a cash boost from a city house builder.

The club provides a fastpaced team sport for people of all ages in the city who use a powered chair.

It offers people with a variety of health conditions including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and spina bifida the chance to play, have a bit of freedom and fun.

The team, which was started by the players with support from their parents, presently has 13 members.

The £1000 donation from Mactaggart & Mickel Homes’ building communities fund will go towards increasing the recruitment of both players and referees.

The cash will also go towards much needed equipment, trophies and medals.

Mactaggart & Mickel’s fund was set up to help organisations and projects which enhance the lives of people in community.

Director Joanne Casey said: “We are delighted to support such a positive organisation such as Glasgow Gladiators.

“We were impressed the club was funded and run by the players themselves and for us to be able to contribute to its growth and success is fantastic. My recent visit to their training session was inspiring and it was great to see the energy and enthusiasm of all the players right from the off.”

The money from the house builder will be used to set up a tournament based on equality and fairness.

Idrees Ahmed, a member of the powerchair team, said: “This vital support will help us buy equipment for the tournament and a trophy and medals for everybody that takes part.

“We hope to recruit as many new participants as possible.” the local
