Hotel bosses silent over plans to build 300 homes
ONE of Renfrewshire’s bestknown hotels faces an uncertain future amid suggestions there are plans to build 300 homes on the site.
Bosses at the Erskine Bridge Hotel have refused to comment on the prospects of a planning application being lodged by Persimmon Homes.
However, a number of Erskine residents are demanding answers, as they fear the infrastructure to support another large housing development in the area does not exist.
Lesley McKechnie is just one of the local residents who have posted comments online to raise concerns over the potential for serious traffic problems if such a development goes ahead. She said: “Our roads are packed morning and teatime every weekday. We don’t need any more. Inchinnan Road can’t take any more traffic coming through.”
Elaine Sweeney added: “We need to improve the infrastructure, roads and amenities before anyone else builds more houses. It’s a nightmare trying to get in and out of Erskine.”
Georgina Hill, who moved to the area 40 years ago, fears Erskine is in danger of being “overloaded” with more housing. She also described traffic in and out of the town as “a nightmare.”
Sharon Wilkes is another resident who indicated she would be opposed to plans for housing at the hotel site.
She said: “No more privateers should be allowed to build houses. The infrastructure within Erskine is deplorable, to say the least.
“Schools, roads, shops and parking are the biggest joke. The whole concept of Erskine has been lost. Greed has taken over.”
A spokeswoman for the Erskine Bridge Hotel declined to comment on the future of the business, or the potential risk to jobs, when contacted. She said: “We’d like to reassure our guests ownership of the hotel remains unchanged and all day-to-day operations are very much business as usual.”
Persimmon Homes said it was “not able to comment” on suggestions a planning application to Renfrewshire Council for the hotel site is imminent.
