Murty’s happy to pass the armband

GRAEME MURTY reckons he has a team of leaders on the park irrespective of who wears the armband for Rangers.

Club captain Lee Wallace has not played since September and a number of players have led the Light Blues out in recent months.

Stand-in skipper Jason Holt was rested for the Scottish Cup win over Ayr United on Sunday as James Tavernier was given the honour at Somerset Park.

The right-back could retain the armband when Murty’s side return to Premiership action against Hamilton this weekend.

And the Ibrox boss is pleased with the number of players in his ranks that can lead by example on the park.

He said: “I am a believer in it being contextual. Jason, who has been the captain, didn’t play last week because he is suspended this weekend and I wanted to give him a break. I wanted to see Greg Docherty play.

“The next person I was looking at, it was who was going to get a really good opportunity.

“The one that stands out automatically is Russell Martin because he has been a captain down south, he is a big character.

“Russell needs to concentrate on getting himself match fit and sharper to integrate into what we are trying to do.

“Tav needed, possibly, a little boost, but also an understanding of this as a developmental thing. It was a big thing for James. A little part of it is reward.

“I am relaxed as to who the captain is because it is possible for all our members to show leadership.

“I actually think Wes Foderingham showed possibly the best leadership of all after conceding the goal. He didn’t go into his shell.”
