Gay Police Association set for name change

-

THE Gay Police Association has announced it will be relaunching to include transgender and intersex interests.

The group, which was set up to represent the needs and interests of gay police officers and staff in Scotland, will now be called the Scottish LGBTI Police Association.

Scotland’s GPA was established in 1990 as an independent staff association for serving po- lice officers and LGB police staff.

Under the rebrand, the old GPA logo will now be replaced with a new one.

The association, which was set up to represent the needs and interests of gay police officers and staff in Scotland, has undergone the rebrand to become more inclusive.

The official relaunch will take place today at Glasgow City Chambers to mark LGBT History Month. General Secretary, Allan Sneddon, said the change has been in the pipeline for some time.

“The organisation was set up 28 years ago and a lot has changed since then”, he said.

“In 2016 we carried out a members survey at our AGM and asked people to give us feedback on how we operate and a possible name change came up.

“It was thought the word gay could be quite restrictive and we want to make it inclusive for everyone.”

In a statement on their website, the association’s said: “This is far more than simply a name change and re-branding.

“A new General Board will replace the former Executive Committee.

“The Association will now include transgender and intersex as well as LGB.”
