Grieving daughter in run for Mother’s Day tribute
A DAUGHTER is to run in honour of her mum, who died of a stroke.
Amy Moffat lost her mum a year ago but is determined to help raise cash for other people who suffer the condition.
Her mother Heather was an English teacher who loved to read, sing and “live life to the full”.
Amy said: “Mum was an avid traveller, a musician – she played the piano for the McRobert’s Male Voice Choir & All Britain Festivals, a keen reader and really enjoyed living life to the full.
“Seeing the devastating effects of her stroke made me realise how vital it is to raise awareness and help provide support for people dealing with the aftermath of stroke.”
Heather was forced to move in with her daughter after her first stroke in 2015.
It affected her vision, mobility and confidence and meant she couldn’t live on her own.
She moved in with Amy who lived in a ground floor flat and while bat- tling with the challenges of her stroke, she gradually regained some independence.
Sadly, Heather had a second fatal stroke just two years later at the age of 60.
Heather had been an English teacher at Renfrew High for more than 30 years.
She was passionate about her subject and due to her lengthy career at Renfrew was inevitably teaching children and some grandchildren of pupils from her early years there.
Heather, along with other colleagues, ran yearly trips to France that culminated in final days in Disneyland.
Over the years Amy, 30, said she has heard many former pupils say these trips were a real highlight of their time at school.
Amy, from Paisley, added: “With the Stroke Association’s Run happening on Mother’s Day, this has given me additional incentive, to take part and give it my all.
“Especially as Mum would love the notion that I was running anything!”
Angie Macleod, Communications Manager at the Stroke Association in Scotland said: “Amy is very aware of the devastating effects of a stroke.
“But she knows with the right support, recovery can be possible.
“Her attitude is positive and we’re greatly looking forward to her participation on the day.”
The Stroke Association’s Glasgow Resolution Run 2018 takes place on Sunday, March 11 at Glasgow Green.
