Eck hails ex-captain for ‘shining example’
SCOTLAND manager Alex McLeish has applauded Scott Brown’s international career after the Celtic midfielder announced his retirement from international football for the second time.
Brown will not feature in McLeish’s side for the forthcoming European Championship campaign but the duo worked together previously when McLeish was in charge of Scotland.
“I would like to thank Scott for his dedication to his country throughout his career,” said Alex McLeish in an SFA statement.
“I have known Scott for a long time – I gave him his first competitive Scotland cap – and I know how difficult this decision has been for him.
“Scott gave his all every time he represented his nation and his influence on the squad is immeasurable – he led by example both on and off the pitch and set the tone amongst the squad.
“He has been a shining example for the younger players in the squad and an influential figure in the dressing room.”
Alan McRae, Scottish FA President, also lauded the contribution of the influential midfielder.
“Since making his Scotland debut in 2005 Scott Brown has been a loyal servant to his country and we are extremely grateful to him for his service,” he said.
“Scott amassed 55 caps, earning him a place on the Scotland international Roll of Honour, and has been a key player for the team throughout his career.
“His influence in the last campaign was instrumental in the team remaining unbeaten in competitive matches in 2017 and coming within minutes of qualifying for the playoffs.
“We wish Scott all the best in his international retirement and I am sure he will now give his all to supporting the team as they prepare for the UEFA Nations League campaign.”
