Football centre cash plan to replace worn-out pitch

- By VIVIENNE NICOLL

A WORN-OUT pitch at Toryglen football centre is to be replaced at a cost of around £250,000.

The centre has three outdoor and one indoor, full-size synthetic grass pitches and a natural grass pitch along with modern changing accommodation.

The venue is heavily used for the full range of football activities including match-play, training, coaching and casual use making it the city’s busiest pitches in terms of user numbers and revenue.

Glasgow Life uses a specialist maintenance contractor to provide annual condition reports for every one of the synthetic surfaces run by the organisation.

A report to councillors says: “These assessments help Glasgow Life to schedule when major investment is required to refresh and replace ageing pitch surfaces.

“Two of the three outdoor, fullsized, floodlit pitches are extensive- ly worn and repair costs increase year on year. Both surfaces are in need of replacement if they are to remain effective in meeting community demand.

“Glasgow Life is seeking to renew both surfaces over the course of two financial years, one in 2018/19 and the second in 2019/20.

“These works will help to maintain the centre’s role as a focus for sports development, training, match-play and events.

“Glasgow Life is keen to conduct pitch replacement during the summer of 2018, minimising disruption during the core football season and avoiding the worst of the winter weather.

“This proposal helps to secure continued access to quality recreational greenspace and all works will be undertaken in line with environmental guidelines.”

This week, councillors will be asked to agree to contribute £100,000 towards the cost of the work.
