Souness: Gers win good for the game

- By CHRIS JACK

GRAEME SOUNESS reckons a Rangers win in Sunday’s Old Firm clash would be good for Scottish football.

The Light Blues will move to within three points of Celtic at the top of the Premiership standings if they can record their first derby victory of the campaign.

Graeme Murty’s side have been in impressive form of late and the Ibrox crowd have started to dream about a possible late bid for the top-flight title this term.

Celtic remain strong favourites to go on and clinch a seventh consecutive league flag but Ibrox legend Souness believes the gap across Glasgow is closing.

He said: “Yeah I think Rangers are a wee bit closer and that is good for Scottish football. It is certainly good for Rangers.

“Celtic are still a bit in front but it would be down to three points.

“They have never been closer to them and I think this weekend will tell us a great deal.

“Obviously as an ex-Rangers man I want that to happen. I think it would be good for Scottish football because then there is a bit of competition again and it is not just a one-horse race.

“I have been involved in some big derbies – Liverpool-Everton, Liverpool-Man Utd, Fenerbahce-Galatasaray – but this is the biggest one.

“What makes it the biggest one? For Rangers and Celtic supporters, I can talk from one side but I am sure it is the same on the other side, you don’t become one, you are born one.

“It is what it means to the football club and the build-up to it is enormous. If you win or lose, the consequences are either fantastic or you are in despair because you have lost.”
