McRobbie desperate to reel in Peasy

Wee Gers frontman vows to make move in top-of-table clash

- By JIM O’DONNELL

IT IS stretching it to describe tomorrow’s Super First Division clash between Petershill and Cambuslang Rangers as a league decider.

After Saturday, the tabletopping Springburn outfit – currently six points clear of the chasing pack – will still have 10 fixtures to fulfil, which is two fewer than third-placed Lang, so it’s perfectly understandable to hear both camps adopting a cautious approach ahead of their encounter.

Nevertheless, victory for the free-scoring visitors would throw down the gauntlet to their Springburn hosts.

Wee Gers front man Calum McRobbie said: “Petershill got away to a flying start this season and we have had to knuckle down and wait our opportunity to narrow the gap.

“It is finally on us tomorrow and we must try to make the most of it by having a go at the Peasy in their own backyard.

“A lot of teams in our situa- tion might look to put people behind the ball and hit on the break but we will play our attacking style.”

The continuing hospitalisation of Lang gaffer Paul McColl will see team affairs left in the capable hands of backroom team Jimmy Kerr, Billy Campbell and John McKeown who were not for giving away their selection last night – even after revealing they had a fully fit squad to choose from.

NOT so fortunate is Peasy boss Willie Patterson, forced into taking an impromptu head count last night after revealing a quartet of his playing charges – Jordan Kennedy, Stefan Graham, Dylan Kennedy and Danny Finnigan are nonstarters, along with long-term injured midfielder Connor Stevenston. The long serving Junior boss said: “I don’t see Connor featuring any time soon and hopes are fainter still for Div Mackay, on the transfer list at his own request.

“We have suffered more than most on the injury front, particularly up front where Scott McManus and last season’s preferred striking pair Chrissy Hall and Jason Hardie have rarely played together.

“Alex Cassells has manfully filled the breach with a number of key goals and I must also give due credit to the four youngsters brought in from West Park Under-21 – Dylan Kennedy, Graham, Ross Barclay and not least Chris Connor, who we have loaned out to Glasgow Perthshire to get him some game time.

“Bringing these talents to the club and developing them is the way forward for Petershill, but they face a real test of character going up against a very experienced Cambuslang line-up tomorrow.

“You cannot call it a league title decider when there is still so much football to be played but the result could prove hugely significant.”

Yet another match-up of title contenders goes ahead at New Western Park where secondtop Renfrew will be seeking to complete the league double over fifth-placed Troon who they beat 1-0 at Portland Park in early December.
