Tommy tells his Saints to put things Wright now
TALKING ST MIRREN
ST JOHNSTONE manager Tommy Wright has urged his side to kick on from Saturday’s fiery Tayside derby win over Dundee in the Ladbrokes Premiership.
Saints strolled to a 4-0 victory at Dens Park which was overshadowed in the end by some ugly scenes involving both dugouts, with Dundee manager Neil McCann denying he slapped the visitors’ substitute goal- keeper Zander Clark on the touchline after the final whistle.
The McDiarmid Park side’s hopes of a top-six finish may be slim, but this was a major step away from the threat of becoming embroiled in a relegation scrap and Wright reckons the confidence should flow from that.
“All things considered, it was a brilliant three points,” he said.
“There was a lot that went on afterwards which was unfortunate, I suppose, but the lads can be proud of their efforts.
“They played some really good stuff and were disciplined throughout.
“Getting the first goal helped enormously and we didn’t look back.
“Now we are looking to build on this, which I think we can as there are plenty of positives.”
Dundee went behind to young substitute Jordan Piggott’s 24th-minute own goal before Chris Kane’s double and a further strike from Blair Alston killed the contest.
“I have told the players what I thought of it,” McCann said.
“I’m embarrassed by the performance and by the result. It doesn’t sit well with me.
“We lost amateurish goals which doesn’t give you a chance.
“All in all, I’m extremely disappointed for obvious reasons.”
