New sports hall as Gaelic School setforexpansion

-

GLASGOW’S Gaelic School is set to be extended as part of plans by Glasgow City Council

he school on Berkeley Street in Finnieston will be upgraded with a four-court sports hall and associated facilities.

The design will tie-in with the existing school and will be built on an existing playground, reducing the size of external playground space.

Developers have stated that the lack of useful sports teaching space is a significant issue for the campus and merits the reduction in space for the kids and that pupils will be able to use the extension during break times and lunch hours.

Members of the public will also be able to make use of the facilities after hours.

In their design . statement the council said: “The Gaelic school in Finnieston currently caters for nursery, primary and secondary school education.

“The existing school is well catered for externally with an outdoor 7-aside 4G pitch.

“However, the internal sports space is currently limited to a small assembly/sports hall as well as a shared dining/multipurpose hall.

“Due to the limited indoor facilities and large number of pupils of differing age groups it has been proposed that a dedicated sports hall extension should be provided to cater for the schools needs. This would take the form of a four-court sports hall with associated break outspace and changing facilities.

“The new proposal must tie in with the existing school and sit appropriately within the site’s context whilst clearly appearing as a modern addition to the school building.”

As previously reported by the Evening Times, demand for the Finnieston school became so high, parents were being offered placed at a new temporary annexe.

Ladywell School in Whiteinch was brought into use to cope with soaring demand for Gaelic Medium Education (GME) and ease overcrowding at the main primary on Berkeley Street.
