- BY ANN FOTHERINGHAM

A YOUNG singer with a bright future is getting ready to help raise the roof at the Glasgow Community Champions Awards tomorrow night.

C iaran Heggarty, 13, from Oatlands, is performing at our first heat of the year, celebrating the fantastic people and groups of the north east of the city.

Now a student of the Angela MacCallum School of Music, the Holyrood Secondary pupil has performed alongside some of the biggest West End stars in the country as part of Movies to Musicals with Glasgow Philharmonia Orchestra. “Ciaran has always loved singing, and he can’t wait to be part of Glasgow Community Champions,” said his mum, Leanne. “He has been asked to sing at charity events for the Beatson and the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, and this year especially it has all kicked off for him,” She smiled: “I can’t say too much about it but we have been up and down to London a few times in recent weeks. He is very excited.”

Tomorrow night’s Glasgow Community Champions Awards, supported by our partners Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership, Glasgow Housing Association, City Building, Glasgow Fort, Scottish Fire and Rescue and Police Scotland, pay tribute to the inspirational individuals and dedicated groups who work hard to improve their communities for all.

Finalists include Beacon Warriors, who bring families together for exercise, healthy eating and more; 84-year-old badminton coach Pat Ferrie, Royston Youth Action and Scottish Fire and Rescue watch manager and CPR training champion Gary Canning.

The winners of the north east heat will join their fellow champions from the north west and south at a grand final in the City Chambers in November.
