Gymnasts spring into action to take bronze
SCOTLAND’S men’s gymnastics team have added to Team Scotland’s medal haul taking bronze at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games i n Australia.
This is the second Games in a row they have made the podium.
Scotland’s medal total, so far, stands at five with gold taken on the cycling track by Neil Fachie in the men’s blind and visually impaired 1,000m time trial.
Speaking from the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre after the gymnastics win, Stewart Harris, sportscotland chief executive, congratulated athletes Dan Purvis, Hamish Carter, Kelvin Cham, David Weir and Frank Baines.
He added: “To overcome the setback of a member of the team being injured during the competition and to still go on to win a medal at this level of sport is a brilliant achievement and shows the strength of this terrific team. We wish Kelvin a speedy recovery.
“Scotland’s athletes have never been better prepared for an away Games, with assistance in preparations on home soil, as well as from the 34 sportscotland institute staff who have played a key role in supporting the athletes here in the Gold Coast.”
He continued: “The performances of our athletes on the world stage in recent years has shown that our approach to developing a pathway to performance sport is delivering real results, and that is being showcased just now..”
“We have made a fantastic start and that is in part testament to the hard work of the sportscotland support team.”
The team from the City of Glasgow Gymnastics Club previously told the Evening Times there is no one they’re afraid to face over the course of the event.
