MURTY: I’VE DONE ALL I CAN TO LAND JOB

Murty insists he’s given job his best shot with Ibrox hotseat up for grabs

GRAEME MURTY believes he has done everything possible to land the Rangers job next season – and that nobody could have bettered his stint in charge this term.

The former Under-20s boss stepped into the Ibrox dugout on an interim basis when Pedro Caixinha was sacked in October.

But he was then handed a deal until the end of the campaign after Derek McInnes rejected a return to his former club i n December.

Rangers have held talks with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard over a

move to Glasgow this summer but Murty insists he is still in the frame to land the top Light Blues job.

He said: “I have got four games left to go and finish my audition for this job.

“As far as I can say, so far I think I have done well coaching and managing with a squad that’s not mine, with no budget, with disparate groups and with some problems in the changing room.

“I am not sure that many people could have taken us to second so far. Obviously there are things in there that I would have liked to have done better.

“But if we continue in a way that I think we can and we finish second then I am not sure how much more I could realistically have been asked to do. If that is enough then fantastic.

“I would love to be able to have the opportunity to bring my players in and put my blueprint on the team.

“I am in the job at the moment. Until I hear otherwise I will doing my damnedest to keep it.”

Murty was tasked with securing second spot in the Premiership and lifting the Scottish Cup when he agreed to continue at the Ibrox helm.

But he takes his side to Parkhead tomorrow for the final Old Firm clash of the campaign with only one of those objectives still possible after the Scottish Cup defeat that was seen as a hammer blow to his chances of remaining in his current post.

Murty said: “Nobody has told me that [I won’t be the manager].

“There is going to speculation and I am not naive. I have been around football long enough to know that conversations happen and people’s names are thrown in.

“That will be by agents and people in the media. Some would take the role, others are pie in the sky.

“That’s fine. Discussions will happen at a level above my remit.

“But why would I consider anything else but doing a job as well as I possibly can to make appointing anyone else as difficult as possible.

“Of course I am [comfortable with the board talking to other people].

“The board would be remiss in their duties if they don’t explore all possibilities to bring the best person in to this club.

“This club deserves the best person in this post. I have an opportunity to prove that I am the best person.

“Thousands of people out there will tell you it’s not me. Fine, no problem.

“I have four games left to do my damnedest to get it, and I will be fighting as hard as I can.”
