Steven Campbell was hit by a white Ford Transit van in the early hours of Saturday morning in Burnhill Street, Rutherglen.

The 27-year-old, who is known as Stevie, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where he later died.

He was with two friends, a man and woman, who were not injured in the incident. They, however, were left extremely distressed by what happened.

Robyn McGill, believed to be his girlfriend, left an emotional tribute at the scene yesterday.

In a message on flowers, she said: “My babe, I can’t get your cheeky wee face out my head.

“Honestly doesn’t feel real, you meant the world and more to me.

“You put a smile on everyone’s face and I will keep you smiling. You will never be forgotten. I love you so much.”

She also paid tribute to him on social media by sharing images of the couple together.

Floral tributes, football tops, scarves and messages of mourning were all left at the scene which is in an area where Toryglen meets Rutherglen.

Another message read: “Stevie, so sad you were taken too soon, miss and love you always.”

A photo of Stevie with friends in happier times was also left at the scene by friends.

A friend on social media said that Stevie was such ‘a wee character’.

Lauren Stewart said: “Such a wee character, known you since you were a wee kid. “Always stopping for a chat with a big smile on your face, rest in peace Stevie.”

It is understood that Stevie is survived by his three children.

Among many online tributes posted on social media, pal Chloe Stewart said: “Rest in peace Stevie.

“You were a good friend to most of my family and majority of the scheme. The place won’t be the same without you. Fly high.”

Another mourner Liz Paul said: “Can’t believe I’m saying this.

“Thoughts go out to all Steven’s family and his wee kids. You are up there with your wee dad son. RIP God bless.”

Detective Inspector Kevin Houliston, from the Major Investigations Team, previously said: “A young man has lost his life and a family has been left devastated.”
