City’s Summer Sessions given the green light despite noise concerns

- BY EDDIE HARBINSON

GLASGOW’S Summer Sessions are to go ahead this year despite concerns about noise.

DF Concerts were granted a licence to hold the festival, to be headlined by Kings of Leon, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Kendrick Lamar later this year.

About 36,000 fans are expected to pack out Bellahouston Park on August 22, 25 and 29.

It comes despite SNP councillor Norman MacLeod raising issues over two of the shows being held on Wednesdays.

Agent Archie MacIver, acting on behalf of DF Concerts, said: “That [Bailie MacLeod’s letter] can be categorised as a ‘not on a school night’ type of comment.

“Thinking that all children will be tucked up on a nice summer’s evening in this day and age is fanciful.

“If we are trying to attract high-profile acts to the city we have got to get them when they are available.

“Kendrick Lamar is the flavour of the month at the moment. He is someone who could be described as a superstar.”

Mr MacIver added that a phone line and email address woulkd set up so residents could report any issues.

His comments came after a report to licensing chiefs confirmed a number of previous complaints had been made about noise. During the inaugural event in 2013, police arrested more than 30 people.

In 2015 angry residents called for a ban on open-air gigs in Bellahouston Park following 38 arrests and 70 fixed penalty notices being handed out at Summer Sessions.

And the report said: “Complaints have been received i n the past i n relation to events in this location.

“Officers visited the event site and carried out noise monitoring and it was found the licence conditions were not breached.”
