STAY THE COURSE AND REAP REWARDS
A positive outlook and the right college provide the makings of a bright future
NO matter if you are an anxious school leaver, unemployed or already in a job there are opportunities across Scotland to improve your career prospects.
A wide range of courses designed to suit all levels of ability is still available at colleges and universities across the country.
People with knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics are particularly in demand at the moment.
The jobs of the future are based on these subjects, known as STEM for short, and employers are keen to attract more women into the STEM sector.
A number of initiatives such as women’s networks, placement programmes and mentoring schemes have been created through the help of Equate Scotland.
Colleges are also starting to run women only courses in engineering which are proving to be very successful.
However, it is important to remember that universities and colleges are not the only option for enhancing career prospects. Apprenticeships are a good career path, enabling people to earn as they learn. There are even apprenticeships up to Master’s degree level, providing them with the skills they need to climb the career ladder.
For those who have just received disappointing exam results – or have done even better than they imagined – advice on how to proceed can be obtained via a free exams results helpline opened by Skills Development Scotland (SDS).
Qualified careers advisers are on hand who have unique access to information on UCAS course vacancies at UK colleges and universities, confirmation and clearing, and who can also give advice about Foundation Apprenticeships for those staying at school, Modern and Graduate Apprenticeships for those looking to start in the world of work, and employment or volunteering.
“Our message for young people and their parents and carers as the results arrive is not to panic,” said SDS Director of Operations James Russell.
“Everything might seem overwhelming, but our experienced advisers and online services are there to help and have information on all the options and opportunities young people can consider.
“Lots of people don’t take a direct route to their chosen career – and our advisers are there to help you find your own route to get there.”
