Muir fires out warning ahead of Berlin final
LAURA Muir has issued a warning to her 1500m competitors that she’s got plenty left in the tank ahead of Sunday European Championship final in Berlin.
The Inverness runner cruised through to the final, winning her heat in a time of 4: 09.12.
Muir already has a European Indoor Championships medal to her name but adding the outdoor gong has been a high priority for the 25- year- old.
And Muir has plenty of confidence that she can achieve that dream despite stiff competition coming from compatriot Laura Weightman who also eased into Sunday’s showdown.
“I just wanted to stay out of trouble and I did that, so yes I am happy. I had plenty in hand,” Muir said. “It was just a case of staying out of trouble and trying to qualifying as comfortably as possible.
“I have been in medal contention before and in the mix but not necessarily No 1. But nothing is guaranteed. Laura Weightman ran well in her heat and there are a few other girls so I am not taking anything for granted and I am going to work as hard as I can.”
Meanwhile in the heptathlon Katerina Johnson- Thompson brought home a silver medal for Great Britain as she recorded a personal best.
Johnson- Thompson led the field by 87 points overnight in Berlin and extended that lead with the long jump, but Belgian Nafi Thiam took back the lead with a monster javelin throw in the sixth event.
The Brit knew she would have to run around 14 seconds quicker than the Olympic and world champion in the final event – the 800m – but could only prevail by 10 seconds.
